1. What is Yarn Count?

Yarn count is a numerical expression that defines the fineness or coarseness of a yarn. In simple terms, it answers the question: "How much length of yarn do I get for a given weight?" A higher count means a finer yarn; a lower count means a coarser yarn.

  EXAM DEFINITION: Yarn count is a number indicating the mass per unit length or length per unit mass of a yarn.

3. The Big Three Systems

English Count (Ne)

The standard for cotton spinning in India and many other countries. It represents the number of hanks (840 yards) of yarn weighing 1 pound.

Ne = (Length in Yards) / (840 × Weight in Pounds)

Example: 40s Ne means 40 hanks (40 × 840 = 33,600 yards) weigh exactly 1 pound. 60s Ne is finer than 40s Ne.

Tex (Universal System)

An ISO standard system. It represents the weight in grams of 1,000 meters (1 km) of yarn. It is increasingly replacing older systems because it is metric-based and easy to calculate.

Tex = (Weight in grams) / (Length in kilometers)

Example: 20 Tex means 1,000 meters of that yarn weighs 20 grams. Lower Tex = Finer yarn.

Denier

Primarily used for continuous filament yarns (like polyester or nylon). It represents the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn.

Denier = (Weight in grams) / (Length in meters) × 9000
